Great rice by the sea
If you want to eat a good daily menu at a good price (even on Sundays) right on the edge of the intense blue Mediterranean, I recommend Villajoyosa, and specifically the Restaurante La Marina which is in the fishing port area with all the colorfully-painted houses.
At La Marina, you can eat well for 15 euros, a price which includes drinks and dessert. There are many options in the area and they all have nice terraces and look good, but a friend of mine from Alicante recommended this one and she hit the nail square on the head!
Our Sunday menu consisted of a choice of mixed salad or fried calamari. If you’re in a group of three or four, for example, you can combine and share things with no problem. You just order what you want and they bring it out family style for everyone. Or, you can order off the menu, but it’s a bit more expensive.
The friendliness of the wait staff is another hallmark of this place. As far as the speed of service goes, I suppose it depends on the number of people in your group, but we didn’t think it was all too speedy. Another great detail is the fresh, warm bread with nuts. Really delicious! The entrée was “arroz a banda” (entrees are usually rice, here). It was delicious and served up in a large paella pan so we could just help ourselves. It was served with homemade aioli.
If the weather isn’t good for the terrace, don’t lose hope! Although you can’t tell from the outside, the inside has two large dining rooms decorated in a rustic, traditional style with regional tile work. I’d go back in a heartbeat!
