La Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta

Il Duomo di Ivrea si trova nella città vecchia, vicino al Castello, facilmente riconoscibile dalla sua strategica posizione su di un’altura, sull’omonima piazza. La sua storia millenaria viene confermata da alcuni reperti di epoca romana conservati nella parte più antica della chiesa, nella cripta. Qui troviamo un sarcofago risalente al I secolo d.C. e un’ara votiva murata in una parete che testimonia il culto per Giove. Scendendo nella cripta ammiriamo alcuni affreschi, in particolare quello raffigurante una Madonna con il Bambino, risalente al XIII secolo. La Cattedrale ha subito grandi trasformazioni nel corso dei secoli, presentandosi così con affreschi di epoche differenti e una struttura in parte con stile romanico e altro in stile gotico. La facciata, grandiosa ed imponente in stile neoclassico si trova sulla piazza Duomo, con un meraviglioso ingresso che da l’accesso alla Cattedrale.

Ivrea Cathedral is located in the old city, near the Castle, easily recognizable by its strategic position on unaltura, sullomonima square. Its long history is confirmed by some Roman remains preserved in the oldest part of the church, in the crypt. Here we find a sarcophagus dating from the first century AD and unara votive walled in a wall that bears witness to the cult of Jupiter. Going down into the crypt admire some frescoes, especially the one depicting a Madonna and Child, dating from the thirteenth century. The Cathedral has undergone great transformations over the centuries, so presenting with frescoes of different ages and with a structure partly Romanesque and Gothic other. The facade, grand and imposing neoclassical is located on Cathedral Square, with a beautiful entrance to the Cathedral laccesso.
