Abbey Ruins

Excellent

The ruins of this abbey are surrounded by modern buildings in the centre of this town in the Scottish Borders. This does not, however, prevent us from rebuilding its ancient splendour from the ruins that remain today. It's a Romanesque building (built in the 12th century by King David I) and it has been suggested that the abbey had military functions, reinforcing the theory that the great power of this abbey was governed by Tironenses monks. The visit is free and pleasant, but the state of the building is still a shame since, because of the 16th century religious reform, only a few traces remain of the colossal building and they need to be constantly watched because of constant deterioration .
