1 review of Kellie Castle

Haunted castle

Excellent

The 14th-century Kellie Castle is just outside the village of Anstruther on the east coast of Scotland and has a reputation for being haunted. The castle was built for the youngest daughter of King Robert I of Scotland (the king who restored independence to Scotland). She and her husband were proclaimed as the Earls of Kellie which is where the castle begets its name. After several violent episodes the castle stood almost in ruins until the Lorimer family purchased the property and restored it. Sir Robert Lorimer was one of the best known Scottish architects. He had spent his childhood in the castle and loved the building that he purchased.

The Lorimers lived here until the early twentieth century when it was then donated to the care of The National Trust who currently maintains and preserves the property. The price of admission is a bit expensive due to the maintenance fees and it is strictly forbidden to take pictures inside but a visit is absolutely recommended. The many elements and motifs from different periods ranging from the Middle Ages to the Victorian Era make this structure gorgeous both inside and out. The ghost stories apparently focus on episodes both from the early periods and more recent ones. For people who like these kinds of places and a scary atmosphere, be sure to check out the children's nursery at the top of the castle. You can practically feel the tension in the room and the terrifying porcelain dolls that fill the room add to the eeriness. I personally would not recommend this particular part of the castle for children.
