Keflavik

Our first contact with Iceland was the city of Keflavik. In a few minutes, we realized just what we would come to expect from our trip through this country. It is a very peaceful country, very kid-friendly, weather that changes constantly, and of course, a landscape very different from what we know in Spain, full of surprises. In fact, just upon exiting the airport, we were greeted with a lovely Icelandic double rainbow. The ride from the airport to the city of Keflavik is only about ten minutes. The sky was leaden and occasionally discharged a burst of rain. The proximity to the North Sea made the city endowed in a semi-constant icy wind that made it feel very wintry and even a bit spooky at times.

However, it seemed that the city was reluctant to a gray environment. We toured the city and saw many houses with quirky colors. It is the way the Icelandic people combat the monotony of adverse weather. Heading down the street, there were almost no pedestrians or traffic. The brave few who were walking were well equipped for the rigors of that hostile environment, and that we were in the middle of summer. That did make us flinch a bit and think about the little warm clothes we had brought. For movie buffs, there are some places that scenes were filmed from Flags of Our Fathers by Clint Eastwood.
