The Katoomba Scenic Railway is a tourist attraction located in the Greater Blue Mountains (New South Walles), which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000. It is located about 100 kilometers west of the city of Sydney, and has been declared by the Guinness Book of Records the world's steepest railway (inclination 52 degrees).
Actually it is a kind of small little train with orange seats descending from the mountains through the lush vegetation of the National Blue Mountains Park. The train ride only lasts a few minutes (walking just under 500 meters), but it is an amazing experience, and the scenery is spectacular.
There are various ways to get there, but the best way to get to the Blue Mountains, is to hire a guided tour from Sydney. You can find a guided tour at any travel agency or hire one from your own hostal or hotel It originally formed part of the mine of Katoomba, built between 1878 and 1900, and you can still see some of the mine's facilities to this dates.
