Wonderful Muslim city
I came to Kargil following the course of the Suru River, supplying the rice fields with a huge quantity of water. It was the first Muslim city in this region. Shia Muslims are a clear example of how society can be without political pressure that we are used to living with. It's old and charming, with really lovely people like in all Muslim cities, this city urges you to go out, explore and interact with its inhabitants, with everyone you pass on the way. The guidebooks do not usually speak well of it, nothing is further from reality. I guess as its so difficult to get here by bus that people cannot be bothered to explore afterwards.
