Then, Intermittently, from the 1850s to the 1890s, this valley was the center of the forest industry in the region. The Kauri is a gigantic tree, which is indigenous to New Zealand, can have a diameter of as much as 7 meters. Currently, it isn't easy to find one of these trees in the valley due to human activity, natural pests, and an affected population. In the Karamatura area, large Kauri tree trunks were transported to the streams that were seriously damaged, and once there, were let go downstream.
Thousands of trees were removed from the forest by draft horses and carriages of tram, in what is now the way in Karamatura. Large logs processed in various mills operating in the valley and Huia Bay. Regeneration of the Kauri in the valley seems slow, but the Kauri adolescents are increasing and are slowly getting back its former habitat. You will see that at the start of the forest tracks, there is a station to disinfect your shoes. For years, a plant pathogen called Phytophthora taxon Agathis (PTA), has caused the death of thousands of Kauris. The spectacular forests here are known all around the world.
