The scenery is beautiful
Kandy Railway Station (or Maha Nuwara in Sinhala) is a little way away from the city, behind the bus station. To go to Nuwara Eliya, take the train from Badulla. Most people do not make the journey, which is a shame because it's beautiful. The train is very slow though and to get to Ella or Badulla takes seven hours. But it's dirt cheap. I think the ticket costs 2 euros!. The scenery is beautiful. You go through the mountains and tea plantations. You greet children. It's very nice. It's much nicer than the bus where you're lucky if you get a seat, and always fear for your life. I loved the trains in Sri Lanka, but you have to have enough time.
If you haven't got enough time, it's a nightmare. Tickets can be bought in advance only for first class, and not all trains have first class. Some trains work at night and have beds with a good level of service. Colombo Trains depart four times a day, but there it's worth taking an air-conditioned bus instead.
