Oddly enough, Prague also has a small island named Kampa Island. It comes from a small canal, which separates Mala Strana from Kampa. This area was formerly used as a place where people could do their washing. During the seventeenth century, the existence of several pottery markets on the island made it famous throughout Prague. Today, it houses a park in its southern part with sculptures and photographic exhibitions, while in the north there are embassies, luxury hotels and restaurants. Part of the island was left submerged after the floods of 2002, and many of its buildings had to be restored.
