Kama Merú

El Salto Kamá o Kamá-merú está ubicado en el kilómetro 201 de la Troncal 10 (Carretera El Dorado-Santa Elena de Uairén). Es una hermosa cascada de unos cincuenta metros de alto que, aunque no es visible desde la carretera está ubicada justo al lado de ella, al frente del campamento. Es un lugar de fácil acceso, no necesitará vehículos de doble tracción para llegar, y es uno de los lugares preferidos por quienes acampan en La Gran Sabana. En el Campamento Kamá encontrará restaurantes y albergues a precios muy asequibles; hay baños, modestos y usualmente limpios (deberá pagar algo al usarlo, como contribución a la limpieza); tiene estacionamiento; una pequeña bodega y muchas áreas verdes para acampar a la orilla del río, en donde también podrá darse un buen baño. Los pemones, que administran y cuidan el lugar, cobran una módica suma por cada carpa que se instale en el campamento, y se esmeran en mantener el orden y la limpieza dentro del mismo. Desde el campamento, la vista del Ilú-tepui es maravillosa, pero la gran atracción del lugar es, sin lugar a dudas, el Kamá-merú; especialmente al caer la tarde, cuando el sol le llega de frente para iluminarla y dibujar un arco iris sobre las pulverizadas aguas que se elevan con el viento. Hay senderos para caminar y es posible bajar hasta la base misma del salto. Y si bien ésta cascada no tiene la magnitud del Salto Aponwao (Chinak-merú), bien vale la pena hacer el esfuerzo y bajar para contemplarla desde su base. Por otra parte, en verano, cuando el caudal del río está más bajo, podemos contratar a un guía pemón para que nos lleve en curiara por detrás del salto. Es un paseo realmente emocionante. También hay artesanos locales que tallan y venden sus productos en el lugar.
