An early missionary
Junipero Serra was the first Franciscan monk to arrive in California. This sculpture describes him as one who brought civilization to the land, which was still inhabited by natives when he toured the country as a missionary. He founded 21 missions, traveling more than 750 miles by mule. The Franciscan order is responsible for the names of the major cities of California and the monk was beatified in 1988.
