Jofre Theatre

Uno de los edificios más emblemáticos de la ciudad, y del [poi=68770]barrio de La Magdalena[/poi], es el Teatro Jofre, que se encuentra en la Plaza de Galicia, frente al [poi=66898]Monumento a los Caídos en África[/poi], la [poi=6815]Puerta del Dique[/poi] del [poi=66811]Arsenal Militar[/poi] y el [poi=66909]Edificio de Correos[/poi]. Realmente su fachada es muy llamativa, está realizada en piedra con múltiples y enormes ventanales. El acceso se realiza a través de una escalinata, donde hay varias puertas bajo un pórtico formado por arcos apoyados en columnas pareadas jónicas; y sobre ellas varias caras o máscaras representando la comedia o tragedia. La fachada actual fue realizada por el arquitecto modernista Rodolfo Ucha Piñeiro (quien también proyectó otros edificios emblemáticos de la ciudad como la [poi=67829]Pescadería[/poi]) en 1921, aunque el teatro fue inaugurado con anterioridad, en Mayo de 1892, según proyecto de Faustino Domínguez. El nombre del teatro es el de su benefactor, Joaquín Jofre Maristany. Este teatro está considerado una de las obras de arquitectura teatral del siglo XIX más importantes de España. En él se dan cita todo tipo de actos culturales, representaciones teatrales, cinematográficas y operísticas. No pudimos visitarlo por dentro, pues había un concierto ese día y sólo se permitía acceder a los músicos, pero por lo que nos dijo el conserje y la información del folleto, el interior tiene forma de herradura, con tres plantas de altura y una excelente acústica, y está decorado al estilo de los teatros barrocos italianos del XIX. En la fachada posterior se encuentra la iglesia [poi=67819]Concatedral de San Julián[/poi], que alberga el patrono de la ciudad.

One of the most emblematic of the city and the neighborhood of La Magdalena buildings, is the Jofre Theater, located in the Plaza de Galicia, opposite the War Memorial in Africa, the Puerta del Dique Military Arsenal Building of mails. Its facade is really very striking, is made of stone with multiple and large windows. Access is via a staircase, where there are several doors under a portico formed by arches supported by twin columns Ionic; and on them faces or masks representing comedy or tragedy. The current facade was made by the modernist architect Rodolfo Ucha Piñeiro (who also designed other iconic city like Pescadería buildings) in 1921, although the theater was opened earlier, in May 1892, designed by Faustino Domínguez. The name of the theater is its benefactor, Joaquín Jofre Maristany. This theater is considered one of the works of theater architecture of the most important nineteenth-century Spain. It brings together in all kinds of cultural events, theater, film and opera performances. We could not visit the inside because there was a concert that day and only allowed access to the musicians, but from what I told the concierge and information booklet inside is horseshoe-shaped, with three floors and excellent acoustics, and it is decorated in the style of the Italian baroque theaters XIX. On the rear facade is the Cathedral Church of St. Julian, which houses the patron of the city.

Inaugurado en 1892, es una de las más importantes obras de la arquitectura teatral de la España del XIX. Su interior de espléndida acústica y hermosa decoración, es testigo de la importante actividad cultural de la ciudad. Las vicisitudes atravesadas por el inconcluso teatro se prolongan al siglo XX. En 1908 incorpora a su programación proyecciones cinematográficas. Después de ser vendido a la empresa Fraga, se le encarga al arquitecto municipal Rodolfo Ucha una reforma para dotarlo de un nuevo frontis y proporcionar al edificio un imponente aspecto de moderno palacio urbano. Lleva una triple división horizontal: basamento, cuerpo principal de doble altura y cornisa. A lo largo del XX continúa sufriendo distintos proyectos y actualmente se encuentra completamente restaurado.
