Important mosque
The Jama Masjid is one of the most important mosques in the city of Ahmedabad, located west of Manek Chowk. It was built by Ahmed Shah in 1423 and contains his tomb. There are 260 columns supporting 15 domes. It can be overwhelming with so many columns and so little space between them, especially if you visit during prayer time. There are many fans in the mosque, circulating the air and making sure that the atmosphere and smell in the building isn't too much to bear. As in all religious sites, visitors must maintain respect, by removing their shoes (as in all mosques). During religious services people must cover their heads and women should not enter the main enclosure.
