An old settlement
This is an example of hundreds of little villages that grew from the private lands belonging to the noble class. These villages generally emerged along trade routes, often along the River Thames or its tributaries. This is the case of Isleworth, which sits on the Crane River. But over time, as the capital grew, these villages were swallowed up, losing their identity and history. Isleworth is an old settlement dating back to Roman and Anglo-Saxon times. It appears in the Domesday Book, which reveals its importance at the time. It is divided into a historic area and a more modern part, the latter consisting mostly of residential buildings.
It is part of the Thames Path route, and one of the most striking areas you'll see, with old pubs and medieval monuments. A really fascinating little village that has been swallowed up by the big city.
