Islands of the Cyclops

5 reviews of Islands of the Cyclops

Cyclops Island

Aci Trezza is a beautiful fishing town about 10 miles from the center of Catania which has a legend thanks to the cliffs of the Cyclops or the islands of the Cyclops. There are eight basaltic rocks emerging from the sea very close to the coast and have a spectacular sizes and incredible shapes. According to legend, these rocks were thrown by Polyphemus from Etna to try to prevent escape Ulysses. In the end, the rocks were not given to him, but actually, thrown into the sea. The reality of these eight rocks is a bit simpler, it is basalt rocks that have formed off the port of Action Trezza due to erosion.

The largest rock has 70 meters high and at the top widens and makes it appear that the rock is protected by a hat. Many tourists come in the summertime and try to climb the rocks. I recommend visiting these rocks at sunset, as the views are amazing because the background is the Etna and when the sun is setting, the shadows of the rocks add a reddish color in the sea amazing. To reach Acci Trezza from Catania is easy, either by car or bus.
