great fun for the whole family
Inveraray is a town situated in the north of Glasgow, on the shores of Loch Fyne. Its great attraction is its old prison, which has now been converted into a museum. The village was built in the Georgian era and, as it was one of the first fully planned cities in Scotland, the prison was built alongside. It was designed in the 19th Century by James Graham. The original plan was for it to have three parts: one for women, one for men and one for debtors. However, in the end due to lack of money just one single prison was built. It was opened at the same time as the court. It closed during the 1960s, before being refurbished in the 90s in order to create a museum.
Inside you can visit the court, the guides will arrange the time and it is great fun for the whole family. They explain the history of those people inside prison and in court. The place is open from 9.30am until five in winter and six in summer, admission is 9 pounds for an adult, and 22 pounds for a family.
