A church in two buildings
The parish church of Kettle, currently belonging to the Church of Scotland, seems to have medieval origins as part of a Pictish settlement that once stood. The building that stands before us today dates back to the eighteenth century when the existing church there was reformed to accommodate more parishioners as the town's population grew thanks to the mining boom. Today, the site has two parts: the old church, which is smaller and is used as a parish hall, and the modern church with a single rectangular bell tower. The historic cemetery has with graves dating back to the seventeenth century and is separated from the church by one of the town's main streets...great modern town planning? Surely it would have been easier to build around the cemetery...oh, well.
