The church of St Walburge belongs to the Diocese of Lancashire and is the Roman Catholic church in the city of Preston. This is surprising, as the city of Preston is one of the most Protestant communities in the UK. The church was built in the mid nineteenth century in a neo-Gothic style according to plans by architect Joseph Hansom. It has the tallest spire in the entire country, visible from any point of the city. The symbolism is clear: it's high enough to reach God or as some say, a needle in a haystack!
It is no longer the only Catholic church in the city or in the area but it performs the functions of a cathedral, without actually being one.
