Atmosphere and Soul
Panajachel is the most visited village by foreigners of Lake Atitlan. Besides the great "gringolandia" with all the souvenirs they offer you, the village has retained its atmosphere and soul. For example, the interior of the church, which is also tourist animation. In this region, people are Tzutuhil, and when the Spanish colonized the area, they built a church and monastery in Panajachel, in attempts to evangelize the Mayan. But it wasn't easy to convert to the people to the Catholic faith, as they had very strong pagan beliefs in the sun, moon, gods and dark powers. Of the original church, you can still see the beautiful colonial facade, highly decorated, but the rest was destroyed over time by earthquakes.
