Iglesia de la Santa Virgen

La Iglesia de la Santa Virgen de Skopje (“Црква Рождество на Пресвета Богородица” en idioma macedonio) es uno de los más importantes templos ortodoxos de la capital macedonia. Se encuentra a un costado del Rio Vardar, en el paseo peatonal que lleva hasta el famoso Puente de Piedra y la Plaza Macedonia. Originalmente, el edificio fue construido con el objetivo de ser nombrado Catedral de la ciudad de Skopje. Una curiosidad histórica del sitio es que su arquitecto –Andreja Damjanov- tenía apenas 22 años de edad cuando inauguró el sitio. En 1842, la iglesia fue dedicada a la Santa Patrona de Skopje, y fue instalado el iconostasio. Lamentablemente, en el año de 1944 el sitio fue incendiado a propósito por ocupantes búlgaros que redujeron la iglesia entera a cenizas. Durante más de sesenta años, el sitio permaneció vacío y prácticamente una generación de macedonios nunca vio al importante templo en pie. Como parte de un ambicioso programa de renovación del casco histórico de Skopje, el gobierno municipal reconstruyó desde los cimientos la Iglesia de la Santa Virgen en el año 2005; posteriormente –en el año 2008- fue oficialmente consagrada, aunque el título de Catedral de Skopje había sido ya transferido a la Catedral de San Clemente de Ohrid.

The Church of the Holy Virgin of Skopje ("Црква Рождество на Пресвета Богородица" in Macedonian) is one of the most important orthodox temples in the Macedonian capital. It is located on the side of the River Vardar, on the pedestrian promenade leading to the famous Stone Bridge and the Plaza Macedonia. Originally, the building was built with the aim of being named Cathedral of the city of Skopje. A historical curiosity of the site is that its architect -Andreja Damjanov- was barely 22 years old when it inaugurated the site. In 1842, the church was dedicated to the Holy Patroness of Skopje, and the iconostasis was installed. Unfortunately, in 1944 the site was deliberately set on fire by Bulgarian occupiers who reduced the entire church to ashes. For more than sixty years, the site remained empty and virtually a generation of Macedonians never saw the important temple standing. As part of an ambitious program of renovation of the historical center of Skopje, the municipal government rebuilt from the foundations the Church of the Holy Virgin in 2005; Later - in the year 2008 - was officially consecrated, although the title of Cathedral of Skopje had already been transferred to the Cathedral of San Clemente de Ohrid.
