La Casa Colón es uno de los edificios históricos más importantes de Huelva que desde su construcción en el siglo XIX ha tenido diversos usos.
HISTORIA:
Este edificio está muy ligado a la historia de Huelva y a su relación con el descubrimiento del continente americano, ya que fue construido entre 1883 y 1892 para conmemorar el hecho. En esa época Huelva experimentaba el mayor auge de su historia (incremento de población, y de la actividad industrial y comercial), así que se decidió celebrar por todo lo alto el IV Centenario del Descubrimiento. Entre otras cosas, se construyó el Gran Hotel Colón, para alojar a los ministros y representantes de las naciones iberoamericanas invitadas al evento.
Tras los festejos conmemorativos, la compañía británica Río Tinto Company Limited convirtió el hotel en oficinas y residencia de sus directivos, pasando a llamarse Casa Colón.
ARQUITECTURA:
En realidad, es un conjunto compuesto por cuatro edificios que se disponen en torno a un jardín central. Se construyeron al estilo británico, son edificios de dos alturas, con acceso a través de pequeñas escalinatas. Los jardines están muy cuidados, y tienen una fuente ornamental en el centro; son como un remanso de paz en medio del trasiego de la ciudad que parecen trasladarnos a otra época y lugar.
LA CASA COLÓN, HOY:
Es propiedad del Ayuntamiento de Huelva, y tiene un uso cultural, como auditorio, centro de exposiciones, archivo municipal... Además, en el interior del recinto se encuentra el [poi=61008]Palacio de Congresos[/poi] de Huelva.
Uno de los eventos más destacados de la capital onubense, de repercusión internacional, es el Festival de Cine Iberoamericano, que tiene lugar anualmente (a mediados de Noviembre) en la Casa Colón.
CÓMO LLEGAR:
Tomando como centro de la ciudad la [poi=60446]Plaza de las Monjas[/poi], hay que seguir la Av. Martín Alonso Pinzón y al final encontraremos la Plaza del Punto, donde se encuentra la Casa Colón.
En esta plaza comienza la emblemática Av. Sundheim, en la que se halla el [poi=60441]Museo de Huelva[/poi], y al final la Plaza de España con el comienzo del [poi=60353]Barrio de Reina Victoria[/poi].
