Hostel Nakashimaya
Kumamoto is a very interesting city to stay when you are in Kyushu. I really don´t think there is any better place. I was completely delighted there. It is an excellent quality hostel. We decided to rent a private room, which was quite small, though it held a tatami and a futon, and was very cozy. We paid 3000 yen, or you can pay 2500 if you bring your own sleeping bag, or if you don´t want to use the futon. There are also rooms shared by 2500 or 2000 if you want the futon. The site is lovely with a beautiful Japanese decor. It is, in fact, a Japanese house complete with sliding doors, for example.
There is a kitchen where we can cook ourselves what we want. I suggest buying food in the supermarket near there (open 24 hours). The owner is very friendly and will direct you and any questions you have. A site advised me to eat ramen really good. She herself will give you a plan and explains how to go to different sites. Besides the kitchen, is also common terrace with views of the main attractions of Kumamoto Castle. Be viewed at night from the terrace is a luxury. The bathrooms and showers are shared but are extremely clean. It's like going to a friend's house (a friend very clean and tidy, heh, heh). And to round, when I left, I did a little gift of a pendant for mobile. Great place to stay in Kumamoto (and above super cheap!)
