A work of art
The Holy Charity Brotherhood has existed in Seville since the mid-sixteenth century but it was not until 1644, when because of ruin to the old chapel, it was decided to build a new church to plans by Pedro Sanchez Falconete.
The work was finished by Fernando de Figueroa. The driving force was Miguel de Manara member of the Order of Calatrava, who was named Elder Brother and who urged the works of charity by the brotherhood.
The aim of the hospital, located in the Atarazanas, was refuge for the poor transients and homeless elderly who were not admitted to other hospitals in the city. Even today it is still in use as a residence for the elderly destitute.
