Holy Mary of the Seven Sorrows Procession

El Viernes Santo por la tarde la Real Cofradía y Esclavitud de María Santísima de los Siete Dolores, Santísimo Cristo de la Agonía y Descendimiento de la Santa Cruz organiza una procesión típica de la Semana Santa Madrileña. La imagen de la Virgen, que data de 1940, sale de la Parroquia de Santa Cruz y recorre el siguiente itinerario: Plaza de Santa Cruz – Plaza de la Provincia – Calle Imperial – Calle Toledo – Calle Tintoreros – Calle Cuchilleros – Plaza del Conde de Barajas – Calle del Conde de Miranda – Plaza del Conde de Miranda – Estación en el convento de las RR. MM. Jerónimas (Carboneras) – Calle del Codo – Plaza de la Villa – Calle Mayor – Calle Ciudad Rodrigo – Plaza Mayor – Calle Gerona – Plaza de la Provincia – Parroquia de Santa Cruz.

On Friday afternoon the Royal Brotherhood and Slavery of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows, Holy Christ of the Agony and Descent of the Holy Cross organizes a typical procession of Holy Week Madrid. The image of the Virgin, dating from 1940, out of the parish of Santa Cruz and covers the following itinerary: Plaza de Santa Cruz - Plaza de la Provincia - Imperial Street - Toledo Street - Street of Dyers - Street Cutlery - Plaza del Conde de Barajas - Calle del Conde de Miranda - Plaza del Conde de Miranda - Station in the convent of the RR. MM. Jerónimas (Carboneras) - Elbow Street - Plaza de la Villa - Main Street - Calle Ciudad Rodrigo - Plaza Mayor - Calle Gerona - Plaza de la Provincia - Parroquia de Santa Cruz.

La Procesión María Santísima de los Siete Dolores es otra de las procesiones más bonitas y populares de la Semana Santa madrileña. Saliendo de la Iglesia de Santa Cruz, en la Calle Atocha, la sombría procesión recorre las calles secundarias de La Latina antes de llegar a la Plaza de la Villa, donde tiene lugar el famoso encuentro con el Cristo de Los Alabarderos. Aunque no soy particularmente religioso, debo admitir que siempre estoy bastante conmovido durante este encuentro. Hay una electricidad en el aire que es casi palpable...tal vez sean las multitudes, el fervor religioso, la tradición o quizás sólo el inmejorable telón de fondo de la Plaza de La Villa iluminada en el aire fresco de abril, tiene algo especial. Después de la reunión con el Cristo de Los Alabarderos, se abre paso a un gran final en la Plaza Mayor antes de volver a la iglesia por la calle Atocha.

The Procession María Santísima de los Siete Dolores is another of the most beautiful and popular processions of Holy Week in Madrid. Leaving the Church of Santa Cruz on Calle Atocha, the gloomy procession goes through the secondary streets of La Latina before arriving at the Plaza de la Villa, where the famous encounter with the Cristo de Los Alabarderos takes place. Although I am not particularly religious, I must admit that I am always quite moved during that encounter. There is electricity in the air that is almost palpable ... maybe it"s the crowds, the religious fervor, the tradition or maybe just the unbeatable backdrop of the Plaza de La Villa illuminated in the fresh April air, but it has something special. After the meeting with the Cristo de Los Alabarderos, a grand final opens in the Plaza Mayor before returning to the church along Atocha street.
