The Founding Families of Los Angeles

Los Angeles was founded on September 4, 1781 by 44 Spanish pioneers under the official name of El Pueblo de la Reina de los Angeles, a name that would be amplified in the popular imagination and the history of The Town of Our Lady, the Queen of the Angels of Portiuncula. Its foundation was organized by the Governor of the Province of California, Felipe de Neve, under the orders of Carlos the Third of Spain. The settler families were recruited in the provinces of Sonora and Sinaloa. The eleven families represented the society's racial differences of the new northern Spain. They were of various races, mostly mestizos, mulattoes, and Indians.

There was only one man from the Spanish peninsula among the group. Olvera Street, Calle Olver or Placita Olvera in Spanish. In this neighborhood in downtown Los Angeles there is a plaza where the city was originally founded. The street attached to the square was first called Wine Street (Calle Vino), Olvera was extended and it was renamed in honor of a local Judge named Augustin Olvera, in 1877. On Olvera Street there are 27 buildings or houses listed as historical sites by the United States, including the Avila Adobe house, Pelanconi House, Pio Pico home and Sepulveda House. In 1930, the street was closed and converted into a colorful market. Today the square is used by the city and Hispanic community for celebrations and music and dance festivals, such as Cinco de Mayo. In the square you can see a plaque with the names of all the families who founded Los Angeles, along with a couple of statues. In front there is a church congregation. All of this, and for its historical importance, makes it one of the must see places in LA.
