Colonial Flavour

You have to explore the city of Sucre with sunglasses because the colonial buildings are so white that they sparkle. The city is abundant with religious architecture, like the old San Lazaro church from the 16th century. Other churches of note are La Merced, with a beautiful chapel, and the convent of St. Francis Xavier. Sucre was the seat of the Archbishop of La Plata (Chuquisaca), and the home to St. Francis Xavier University of Chuquisaca, the Supreme Court and the seat of government of the Republic until the late 19th century. Magnificent architecture

The city of Sucre is in the department of Chuquisaca. It's also known as the "city of four names" because throughout its history, it was baptized four times. It has been called: La Plata, Charcas, Chuquisaca, and is currently called Sucre. The current name is due to the first president of Bolivia, whose surname was Sucre. Interestingly enough, this city was among the first to rebel against Spanish rule. The Chuquisaca Superior Court was established here, in which independence of Upper Peru was proclaimed, becoming the Republic of Bolívar and later, Bolivia. In 1948, much of the city was destroyed by an earthquake and rebuilt with modern structures, broad avenues and parks, like Bolivar or Liberty.
