One of the most-visited castles of Scotland
This is one of the most-visited and best-preserved castles of Scotland. Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, known as the Queen Mother, spent her childhood here. In the same place, she gave birth to her daughter, Princess Margaret. This castle has many legends: the first, dating back to 1034, tells how King Malcolm II was killed by a group of rebels as they fled. It says they later drowned in the lake near Forfar. According to another legend dating back to 1372, when the family moved to Lyon Forteviot, they were told that if they ever left Forteviot a misfortune would befall them. A few years later, in 1538, Janet Douglas was condemned to the stake for plotting against the King Jacques V.
