A Unique Experience in the Canadian Rockies
The Glacier Skywalk is a glass-floored platform that juts out 918 feet over the stunning Sunwapta Valley in Jasper, AB, deep in the heart of the Canadian Rockies. The experience costs about $25 per person, and begins at the Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre, where a bus will transport you to and from the Skywalk. The Skywalk itself is quite the experience - while I will be honest in saying that it is not quite as impressive in person as it looks in the photographs used in advertising - it will still get your adrenaline pumping. The recommended time to spend at the Skywalk is about an hour as there is an optional interpretive audio tour and several educational stations to observe before you reach the Skywalk itself.
We only spent about 30 minutes in total at the Skywalk, but it all depends on how much you're hoping to get out of your experience. For me, standing on a glass platform nearly 1,000 feet above the valley was slightly terrifying at first, but after a few minutes I built up the courage to walk out to the middle of the Skywalk. We were lucky to be visiting at a time that wasn't super busy, which meant that we could snap some fantastic photos, but be prepared that your photos will likely have throngs of tourists in the background as this is a very popular attraction. All in all, I'd say that the Glacier Skywalk experience was worthwhile, however you may want to include a few other activities (like a tour of the glacier or a few hours in Jasper) if you're making the long drive in from a place like Calgary or Banff. The round trip from Calgary is almost 8 full hours of driving, and if the Skywalk was the only thing you drove out to see, you may find yourself slightly underwhelmed. However, it is definitely worth a visit if you've got another reason to visit the area!
