Giethoorn

Giethoorn is located northeast of Amsterdam, an hour and a half or two hours drive by car, depending on traffic and the route chosen. Giethoorn is known as the Venice of the North. In the past the channels were the only means of transportation and the boats were the soul and life in the village. Today, things have changed as cars are no longer a rarity and its historic center was modernized with a series of bicycle paths. The channels however are still urban arteries as well as an important tourist attraction. One of the most popular attractions offered by Giethoorn is an unforgettable boat ride in the evening.

You can rent motor boats and rowing boats, except during the off-season and weekdays. We were lucky and happened to find an open venue, that had been booked for a wedding, that had its own boat for groups and were given the opportunity to enjoy a one-hour ride. The price was € 5 per person. This is a video of this charming Dutch village and boat trip on canals, which took us to the lake.

Have travelled to many European destinations. Giethoorn is unlike any place I've photographed before. Unique & beautiful. Was overcast in November when I visited. I would imagine it is even more beautiful in the sunshine summer months. I recommend booking a boat trip beforehand. Is inexpensive. TIP; Book a trip from Amsterdam that includes the boat trip. I made the awkward 3 trains + bus journey which was a pain... At least I can say it was worth it...but not recommended. A Beautiful & picturesque water village- Giethoorn.
