Historic Gate

Only one of the city's four gates, the eastern one, has been preserved and this leads to the Gradec neighbourhood. Apart from being practical, it's also surrounded by a legend which is very important to Zagreb's citizens ve are very devout. According to this legend, the great fire of 1731 destroyed nearly all of the wooden door except for a painting of the Virgin and Child by an unknown 17th century artist. People thought that it was a magical or a miraculous painting and since then, they have come to the site to pray and make offerings. On the inside of the doors on the wall, they have used the space as a chapel with benches for the people to pray before the image locked behind iron bars and surrounded by candles and flowers.

Upon leaving the western Gradec, you can find the Dora statue

Between religion and legend

Fra religione e leggenda

Excellent
And 'one of the most special places in Zagreb, as well as one of the most loved by its inhabitants. Stone Gate, the only gate survived the demolitions nineteenth century and preserved intact to the present day, it is a place of worship among the warmest. Behind the image of the Madonna, which is now preserved behind an iron gate of Baroque style, lies in fact a miraculous story. During the fire that destroyed the port in 1731 (it was rebuilt thirty years later), all the pieces of wood were destroyed, except on an icon of the Madonna and Child that from that day became an object of worship. For this, every day you can scogere faithful in prayer on the benches placed in the least worst one of the corners of the door or directly in front of the grate with the sacred image. The inner walls of the sacred door are covered with votive offerings and created a small space where the faithful can light the candles. Faithful from every part of the country come here on pilgrimage.

Stone Gate

Porte de pierre

Excellent
The stone door of Zagreb, or "Kamenita Vrata" is the only preserved gate of the city of Zagreb. It opens onto the city of Gradec. Dating back to medieval times, the door of Zagreb is a survivor of the fire of 1731. During the fire, the painting of the Virgin and Child miraculously escaped the ravages of fire, which has made this a place of worship. It now houses a small votive chapel, where passers-by stop to pray and light a candle.
