Gangotri è un piccolo villaggio che si trova nello stato dell’Uttarakhand, ai piedi dell’Himalaya indiano. Si trova a circa 3200 metri di quota e si raggiunge seguendo una strada molto tortuosa e ardita da Uttarkashi. E’ molto famoso in India perché è il punto di partenza di uno dei più ambiti pellegrinaggi per gli induisti, quello alle sorgenti del Gange, che si trovano a circa 15 chilometri. Ma è inoltre la base per diversi trekking come quello al lago Kedar tal e ai campi base dello Shivling e del Baghirathi, e per diverse salite alpinistiche. Nel villaggio si respira un’atmosfera di grande spiritualità e ci sono molti sadhu che vivono nelle grotte circostanti. Oltre ai trekking l’altra grande attrazione di Gangotri sono le cascate di Gaurikhund, che si tuffano in una profonda forra tra splendide rocce rossastre modellate dagli elementi.
