1 review of Fukusai-ji Kannon

A jewel of art and engineering hidden in another neighborhood of Nagasaki.

Taking advantage of the fact that we are in Nagasaki, it is worth mentioning how the first Christians who came to Japan through Nagasaki (Portuguese and Spanish) took advantage of the iconographic similarity of the Kannon with the Virgin Mary and the similar virtues attributed to them to popularize the new religion by the country. This temple was erected by Chinese immigrants in 1628 in response to the new anti-Christian law (they needed to register in a temple to prove that they were not Christians and instead of enrolling in an existing local temple, they created their own). The original temple was destroyed after the atomic bomb in 1945 and the one that remains is a reconstruction of 1979. It was decided to reconstruct it with a unique design (the roof of the temple itself simulates the shell of a turtle with its head sticking out and symbolizes Buddha) and is dedicated to the victims of war.
