Flamingos

It is a wetland located in the town of Fuente de Piedra, in the region of Antequera. It is the largest lagoon in Andalusia, 6.5 km long and 2.5 km wide. This lake is supplied by groundwater and precipitation is highly seasonal, alternating between periods of flooding and periods of drought. During the spring, when the saltwater lake dries, salt crystallizes on the surface. This salt has been commercially exploited since Roman times to the 50s of the last century. This place is most well known for hosting the largest colony of flamingos in the Peninsula and the second largest in Europe. There are also other birds such as avocet (with red, long legs, ducks ...

The Andalusians have built various trails and there are various viewpoints from which to observe the birds, these trails are identified and indicate the amount of time it takes to visit them. The lagoon is fully fenced making it impossible to get close to the water, and from this vantage point, the flamingos are slightly further away than one might wish. Within the reserve you can go to the Visitor Center José Antonio Valverde.
