Franz Josef Glacier

Según los científicos en ningún lugar del planeta, a esta latitud, hay glaciares tan cerca del océano. Y es que resulta extraño que apenas dejada atrás la playa de Bruce Bay, la de los troncos en la arena, aparezca este glaciar tan cerca de la costa. Para llegar a él dejamos atrás el lago Matheson y subimos un poco en altitud, para aparcar, tras recorrer una boscosa y sinuosa carretera en la explanada que hace de antesala al glaciar. Tomamos un sendero que nos lleva a la morrena, y es aquí donde nos damos cuenta de los estragos que ha producido el cambio climático, ya que se supone que donde empieza el sendero, un lecho pedregoso por donde discurre un agua de color gris oscuro que contiene la llamada "harina de roca", lleno de piedras rojas y bordeado por escarpados acantilados que albergan un ecosistema tremendamente fértil, en su momento se encontraba completamente cubierto por el hielo. Aquel glaciar al que los maoríes llamaban "las lágrimas de la joven del alud" y que fue explorado por un aventurero austriaco es hoy un recuerdo del esplendor de principios de siglo, aunque aún llegar a él impresione bastante. Para acercarnos en la medida de lo posible a la pared de hielo y nieve, debemos caminar unos cuarenta minutos. Primero por el lecho, y ya casi al final subiendo una pendiente de arena que tras varios altibajos nos lleva hasta el punto más cercano al que se permite llegar al visitante. En el camino hemos dejado atrás cascadas, puentes colgantes, bosque semitropical y enfrente tenemos la pared de hielo azul que se forma por la compresión de la nieve. Hay quien quiere estar aún más cerca y contrata circuitos aéreos en helicópteros e incluso paseos guiados sobre el glaciar, pero ese día las condiciones meteorológicas, con nubes y viento no lo permitían. Después de admirar lo poco que nos dejaban ver esos nubarrones, volvimos al aparcamiento y allí estaban mis amigos los keas, esos loros que sólo viven en las montañas de la isla sur y que son gamberros hasta decir basta. ¡Pero me encantan!

Ya sea por helicóptero, un largo trekking o caminando apenas 2 kilómetros hasta su lengua terminal, merece la pena su visita. Anecdóticamente este explorador no tenía como misión explorar el glaciar, sino visitar el país para conocer las condiciones de vida de los alemanes que por aquel entonces vivían en Nueva Zelanda. En la historia reciente, el glaciar estaba en pleno retroceso entre los años 1940 y 1980, cuando este fenómeno se empezó realmente a documentar. De repente a partir del año 1984 comenzó a crecer y así estuvo hasta principios del siglo XXI. Siglo en el que se ha iniciado un claro retroceso. Fran Josef es junto al glaciar Fox, los dos más importantes del país y con mejor accesibilidad. Quizás Fox sea menos espectacular a primera vista, pero tiene un mirador mas impactante con vistas a las zonas de grandes bloques de seracs. De hecho podemos acércanos a tan solo 80m de la lengua, mientras que en Franz Josef solo podemos aproximarnos a 200m. En mi opinión aconsejo ver ambas lenguas terminales, ya que cada una tiene su propio encanto.

Un paseo por el valle y la morrena del glaciar, que en su retroceso por el calentamiento ha dejado este peculiar acceso. La humedad del lugar además hace que todo esté lleno de un bonito manto verde

Es un paisaje espectacular pero a la vez muy triste, pues queda mas que a la vista el cambio climático que llevamos sufriendo años. Hay carteles que indican donde estaba el glaciar hasta 10-20-30-50 años y es increíble como ha ido desapareciendo. Es apto para cualquier persona que pueda andar, se va entre piedras y apenas hay algún repechito.
