The Hidden Memorial
This is one memorial in Washington DC that I wish I had spent more time at. There is just so much to see in this amazing city, that it is hard to give the same attention to everything. We had gone through a very long day of visiting museums and memorials and statues by the time we decided to circle around Tidal Basin. The Basin is wonderful and beautiful. It looks like something right out of a movie.
Surrounding Tidal Basin (besides a million cherry blossom trees which are especially wonderful at this time of year...spring!) are the Martin Luther King Jr Memorial, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial. By the time we had walked to this memorial it was getting to be evening. The sun was setting and there were winds working up that could blow down the Washington Monument. So we did not spend as much time here and I would especially like to go back and see it all. When arriving at the memorial from the Tidal Basin walkway it looks like a cave/gorge rock area that was placed onto the sidewalk. It is not immediately apparent that this place is a memorial. (Except for the loads of people) Walking up the steps towards the rock and seeing all the pathways/corners to look around almost make it feel like a maze. Then the famous words that have been carved into the rock wall jump out at you and you know exactly where you are.
