Most romantic restaurant in Galle
Fortaleza was a true find. While we were casually exploring the streets of historic Galle Fort, we came across an intriguing doorway lit with torches and decided to pop our heads in. We found a beautiful courtyard with charming picnic tables, candles, and banana trees surrounded by a covered dining area with intimate candlelit tables and exposed 16th century walls (the building was actually once a colonial-era spice warehouse). With the chirping crickets, light humidity, and low lighting, it’s about as romantic a place as you can imagine. We immediately decided we were coming back later for a drink!
We came back an hour or two later and ordered a few rounds of refreshing and well-mixed gin tonics, a rare treat in Sri Lanka. The service was quick and polite and the soft music and candles made for an unbeatable atmosphere. We didn’t order food but had a chance to check out the menu: it seemed to be a mix of Middle Eastern-inspired mezze (which is oddly common in Sri Lankan resort areas), fresh fish sourced directly from the village fishermen, and skewers of fresh vegetables and marinated meat that you cook on small charcoal grills right at the table.
