1 review of Flatiron District

Silicon Alley

The Flatiron District is a small district of Manhattan, named after the Flatiron Building at 23rd Street, Broadway and Fifth Avenue. Roughly speaking, the Flatiron District is bounded by 20th Street, Union Square and Greenwich Village to the south, Sixth Avenue and Chelsea to the west, 25th Street to the north, Nomad and Rose Hill to the northeast and Lexington Avenue/Irving Place, Gramercy Park and the Gramercy neighborhood to the east. Broadway passes through the center of the district. At the north (uptown) end of the district is Madison Square Park, which was completely renovated in 2001.

The Flatiron district is quite varied, containing within its boundaries interesting locations like the Ladies' Mile Historic District and the birthplace of Theodore Roosevelt, a National Historic Site.

The nickname "Flatiron District" for this area is of relatively recent vintage, dating from around 1985, and came about because of its increasingly residential character and the influx of many restaurants in the area, changing the character of the neighborhood. Before that, the area was primarily commercial, and was often known as the Photo District because it was particularly popular with photographers with many studios and associated businesses located there. From the 2000's onward, many publishers have moved their offices into the district, as well as advertising agencies and so many web start-ups that the area is considered to be part of "Silicon Alley" or "Multimedia Gulch", along with TriBeCa and SoHo. Notable buildings in the district include the Flatiron Building, one of the oldest skyscrapers in New York, which gives the area its name. You'll also find the Met Life Tower just off Madison Avenue. Built in 1909, it was the tallest building in the world for four years until the completion of the Woolworth Building in 1913.
