Flaminian Obelisk

The Flaminian Obelisk is one of 13 ancient Roman obelisks it's in the center of Piazza del Popolo and marks the beginning of the Via Flaminia, hence its name. It's one of the first Roman obelisks brought from Egypt to Rome. Via Flaminia leads from Rome to the Adriatic Sea and the city of Rimini. The obelisk temple comes from Re in Heliopolis and was brought by Emperor Augustus to Rome. It was built to decorate the sun temple of the ancient Egyptiani city Farao by Seti I. There were 2 obelisks and the other is in Montecitorio Square. The broken obelisk was found during excavations and Pope Sixtus V had them renewed in the sixteenth century to decorate the streets of Rome.
