Pammakaristos Church

Pammakaristos Church, also known as the Church of the Blessed Mother of God (Theotokos Pamakaristos) is today partly a museum and is one of the most famous Byzantine churches in Istanbul (Turkey). The paraclesion (side chapel) is one of the most outstanding examples of architecture from the time of the Paleologos emperors and contains the largest number of Byzantine mosaics in Istanbul after St. Sophia and the Church of St. Saviour in Chora. It usualy has a square with five domes, but the ratio between the vertical and horizontal is much higher than usual (although not as much as in the Byzantine churches built simultaneously in the Balkans).

The marble interior has largely disappeared, but the remains of Byzantine mosaics have been restored, which are an important source of late Byzantine art, although not as varied or in as good condition as those of Chora Church.
