Festival of Nossa Senhora do Carmo

To mark the feast day of Carmen, on the Sunday closest to July 16, a pilgrimage takes place at the Penha Mountain in honor of the Virgin. Early in the morning, a procession proceeds to the Virgen del Carmen from the Grotto of Our Lady of the Carmen (at the southern end of the mountain) to the Sanctuary, where Mass is celebrated. Then there is a popular pilgrimage in which people make a picnic to eat in the picnic areas and there is dancing and singing. At around 17h, the procession takes place in reverse, returning Mary to her cave. There is a market which sells typical biscuits and fruits.
