A tribute to all the Serbs
Otocac is a tiny village in the interior of Croatia that does not appear in any guidebook and, although it is surrounded by lush green landscapes, there's not much to see, however, it is a place I will never forget. We traveled by van and when we got to Otocac we saw that everyone was celebrating a big party, so we decided to stop. They had set up a huge tent in a meadow and its interior was filled with long tables and wooden benches. When we arrived they were cooking on a stunning grill and had all kinds of food and drink. They told us that this is a party was a tribute to all the Serbs who lived in this town before the war and who had to leave their homes during the conflict.
Two years ago in July all Croats who lived here went back for this party - it was one of the most emotional events I've ever experienced. The people have no problem telling you how it was for them during the war, how it changed their lives, etc. For me it was a unique experience because it helped me better understand the horror of conflict. But apart from the sad stories the party was wonderful. There was live serbian music (I loved it, by the way, because it is very lively) and everyone was dancing on the tables and everywhere The food consisted of a giant sausages, chorizo, pork bellies, etc. It was exquisite, and to drink, everyone took a wine like claret or beer. Best of all are the super friendly people, they offer you everything you have, and in just one hour we had made friends with more than twenty people, amazing.
