Treasures of the past: Duke Pit Fanhouse
These ruins are confusing because from the bottom, in the port area, they seem to be the remains of a castle, but once at the top we were surprised to learn that they are the access and ventilation of a coal mine, a now defunct industry which once made the people rich. Above all, it's something very different. It's a vestige of the industrial revolution, partly because it's forgotten by many, but also due to the rarity of authentic historical gems. Many people got rich here, but there were many more who lost their lives, so the people of Whitehaven are aware of everything that they owe to the industry and all those who gave their lives for their work.
Interestingly, it's a highly visible location as is promoted, but visitors show little interest in its historical aspects. This particular factory ceased operating in 1844 and today the remaining vents are the same, as I say many might think its the remains of a small castle. The conservation is good but practically free access to the car park, which tells us that it could be vandalized at any time. A shame but it is what it is. Hopefully they know how to take care of this monument properly.
