San Juan Chamula
The San Juan Chamula riding trip is a standard excursion if you're spending time in San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas. San Juan Chamula is a small remote town located 10 km from San Cristobal, built into the mountainside at a height of 2200 meters. Generally, trips leave in the morning around 9am. The guide says that if you've never ridden a horse, no problem, and walks with the group. There is a beautiful journey through the forest and jungle of Chiapas. At a security level, it's okay, but don't bring all your money when you go; it's better to leave it in the hotel or at reception, against a receipt.
The town of San Juan Chamula is much more traditional than San Cristobal, indigenous rituals are commonplace. Although it's a colonial city, you'll find a lot of traditional Totzil here. Generally, the horseback ride lasts an hour, but then there is no time to discover the people, as you have to be back in an hour. There are some afternoon departures, but the risk of rain is greater.
