Carlos Olmo
oldest lighthouse in Portugal
Espichel Cape Lighthouse is one of the oldest in Portugal. Built in 1790 due to the order of Pombal of 1758, the fixed white light had a 30-mile range. In 1947 the optical apparatus was changed with one that had been installed in the Cabo da Roca lighthouse. Transformed into the aeromarine design it had simple white flashes every 4 seconds and a range of 42 miles. In 1948 a beacon was installed. The lighthouse became fully automated and currently has a range of 26 miles. It's located in Cape Espichel, Sesimbra [38 ° 25.01 'N, 09 º 12.89' W].
