Elevador da Gloria

Funicular Gloria is a classic, trundling up or down the hill, meeting the matching carriage halfway. Enjoy the street art gallery as you pass and Lisbon really has some world class street art. At the top the views from the garden reach across Lisbon to the sea.

The funicular first opened in 1885 and was originally water powered. Funicular fans should also visit Wellington, Hong Kong, Valparaiso and Bridgenorth in Shropshire.

It runs along a steep and narrow streets to end at the Mirador de San Pedro de Alcántara. The car is quite old but kept in perfect condition. Best, go early in the morning to avoid the tourist crowds, and enjoy the journey.
