Elephants in Kandy

1 review of Elephants in Kandy

It's pretty impressive

The elephant is a sacred animal in Sri Lanka, but unfortunately there are very few now in the wild. You can see them at Buddhist temples in Kandy where each one has several resident elephants, and they are considered sacred animals. The elephants come out once a year with beautiful dresses for the festival of Esala Perahera, , to participate in the nocturnal processions. During the day, they're up by the temple of the tooth and you can see, feed them, watch them bathe in public fountains in the city ... it's pretty impressive to see so many elephants at once, when in general if you go to a zoo, you might see maybe two or three.
