Between water, woods and nature
Carron Valley represents the official center of activity in Campsie Fells. There's a mountain bike circuit, hiking trails, children's areas and access to the lake and marsh. It's very crowded and busy during the summer but deserted in the winter which is my favorite time to go. The woods are lovely and the longer hiking route passes through the forest and across several hills some 20 kilometers to reach the outskirts of old Glasgow. There is currently a wooden medieval fortress that was reconstructed nearby. It appears to be on top of a Pictish fortification foundation which makes sense given its location near the water and covered forests and the fact that it's flanked by the valley itself.
