Traditional Basque Cuisine

One of the things that surprise you the more before going in, is the historical building of the 15th Century with its beautiful façade and excellent location in downtown Vitoria.

Once inside, you will not be disappointed with the main dining room and various private rooms for family and business dinners.

The food is quite good, traditional Basque cuisine. I tried the duck (one of my favorite dishes) and it was very good. I was not surprised with the entrees; maybe I was expecting something more. But the wine is very good, something happens in this area that the wine tastes better here than in Madrid.

By the way, the wine cellar is spectacular.

Full of History

It was founded in the 15th Century as a coaching inn and it became one of the most important buildings in Vitoria-Gasteiz.

Its name, El Portalón, makes reference to its oak entrance (“portal”, in Spanish) opened for many years to shelter merchants and their carriages. Today, it is considered a historical and cultural place of interest.

It is one of the most interesting restaurants in Vitoria-Gasteiz. It was rehabilitated in the fifties, when it became a restaurant, and it has received important figures such as the Kings of Spain, presidents, Lehendakaris and many members of the arts.

Its gastronomic repertoire is inspired in two sources: traditional Basque cuisine, with all its flavors, mixed with hints of the most exquisite modern cuisine. Moreover its wine cellar is one of the most prestigious one and has the best wines, with over 270 references.
El Portalón has five dining rooms, open for celebrations, with different names and decorations that will win over the customers.

Choose any of the menus to accompany the best wine: the Medieval Menu, the 15th Century Menu, the Vitoria-Gasteiz Menu, and enjoy the best food of the area while you journey back in time to the Middle Ages, since the restaurant also offers theatrical dinners that recreate the story of the place.
