El Mentidero Square

La plaza del Mentidero es uno de esos lugares entrañables del casco antiguo de Cádiz. Su historia data de principios del siglo XVIII y al poco tiempo ya se convirtió en uno de los barrios más emblemáticos de la ciudad, y aun lo sigue siendo. De forma alargada y sin tener un gran tamaño esta plaza se encuentra entre el famoso parque Genovés y la Facultad de Filosofia y Letras y cerca de la plaza San Antonio. Su nombre original era Plaza de la Cruz de las Mentiras evolucionando a su nombre inicial que nos indica las actividades más típicas en esta plaza: contar mentiras ... principalmente exageraciones de pescadores (ya que la Caleta queda muy cerca) y de algún otro desocupado que encontraba su distracción en difundir noticias (verídicas o no) de la vida cotidiana de la ciudad. En la actualidad es un punto de referencia durante los carnavales, y es un lugar tan tranquilo como agradable para tomar algo al aire libre.

El nombre de mentideros según se cuenta, se debe a que en dicha plazoleta, se reunían todas los desocupados y comadres a "cortarle un traje al vecino" ( así se le llama en Andalucía cuando se habla mal de otra persona) propagando todo tipos de rumores y mentiras. En la época de los carnavales, en esta plaza se suele levantar un tabalao dónde las comparsas y chirigotas cantan sus canciones, por lo que suele ser una de las plazas mas concurridas de Cadiz
